Obituary

Willis Harrington Carter, 95, of Wildway Road, Appomattox, died Sunday, November 4, 2012. He was married to Leah Beasley Carter, who preceded him in death, for 63 years.

He was born on March 12, 1917, in Appomattox County on the Carter family farm to the late Thornton Randolph and Bessie Morris Carter. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church where he served as chairman of New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery Committee for numerous years. He was a graduate of Appomattox County High School, a farmer and a local forest warren for over 30 years.

He is survived by two children, Albert Harrington Carter and wife Joan of Appomattox and Karen Faye Carter of Mechanicsville; three grandchildren, Jason Harrington Carter and wife Heather of Stuarts Draft, Jennifer Carter Horton of Forest, and Jared Daniel Carter and wife Rebekah of Raleigh, NC; six great grandchildren, Adam Harrington Carter, Nathalie Marie Carter, Nathan Joshua Carter, Wyatt Joseph Carter, Jacob Tyler Horton, and Logan Mason Horton; a brother, Richard Burke Carter and wife Bolling, all of Appomattox; a sister, Virginia Carter Wells of Knoxville, TN; and numbers nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by six brothers and a sister.

The family would like to express their gratitude to Bonnie Johnson and Marie Durrett for the loving care they provided Willis in the last years of his life.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, November 6, 2012, in New Hope Baptist Church by the Rev. Wes Williams. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:00 a.m. until time of service.
