William Sydnor Pugh passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, February 15, 2018. He was born on May 31, 1936, in Lynchburg, VA, to James J. and Thelma Lawson Pugh and was raised in Charlotte County, VA. He attended Virginia Episcopal School and graduated from Randolph Henry High School in Charlotte County. He then received his B.S. in construction engineering from Virginia Tech. After graduation he served in the Navy (Sea-bees) before returning to Lynchburg, Virginia, where he worked in the construction business until he "hung up" work. He then served as an active volunteer at the Old City Cemetery for many years, leaving the legacy of the "Pughmobile" for easy transportation ("Why walk when you can ride").
Bill married Dolly Janette Foster on November 16, 1963, and they were blessed with two daughters, Cary Douglas Pugh and Sydnor Pugh Smalera (Andrew), and one granddaughter, Frances Amelia Smalera.
He was an active member of Rivermont Evangelical Presbyterian Church, serving as elder and deacon. He was a member of the Southside Masonic Lodge (AF&AM) No. 191 in Pamplin, VA. He also was a member of the Jamestowne Society and the Order of the Descendants of the Ancient Planters.
In addition to his wife, children, and granddaughter, he is survived by his younger brother James J. Pugh, Jr. (Margie), his sister-in-law, Nancy F. Williams (James), and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family is grateful for the care provided by "Mary and her angels" and the Centra Hospice team, especially Chrys Blue.
A graveside service will be held 3:00, Sunday, February 18, 2018 at Madisonville Presbyterian Church, 300 County Line Road, Cullen, Virginia. The family will receive friends at the church after the service.
