Appomattox: William Nelson (Bill) Baird, 76, of Pumping Station Rd., died Sunday, August 26, 2007 at his residence. He was the husband of Roberta (Bertie) Burge Chernault Baird.
Born in Cumberland, MD, November 8, 1930, he was a son of the late William and Margaret Cunningham Baird. Bill retired from the US Navy with 21 years service and from Fairfax County. He served during the Korean War, Vietnam War, and the Cuban Missile Crisis and was a member of the Navy Underwater Demolition Team. He was a member of the Moose Lodge #975, the VFW, the American Legion Post #104, the Fleet Reserves and a Primary School Mentor. Bill was an NASCAR enthusiast and an avid West VA Mountaineer and Washington Redskin fan.
In addition to his wife he is survived by five step-children, William (Bill) Chernault and wife, Raiza, Michael Chernault, Liz Harlow and husband, Sonny, Bonnie Hendricks all of Appomattox, and Frances Massey of Woodbridge; a brother, George Baird; a sister, Nan Delaney both of Florida; five step-grandchildren, Lance Chernault, Timothy Scruggs, Sarah Orlando, Joey Hendricks, and Brooklyn Pribble; three step-great grandchildren, Sydni Chernault, Isabell Scruggs, and Timothy Scruggs IV; two nephews, Ralph Baird and wife, Carolyn and their twin sons, William and Joey Baird and Ted Saunders and wife, Michelle and their sons, Galen and Devon Saunders.
Funeral services will be held 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 29, 2007 at Robinson Funeral Home by the Rev. David Drinkard.
