May 10, 1943 – February 26, 2018
Wendell Trout Grissom Sr., 74, of Appomattox, passed from this life into the presence of his Lord and Savior on Monday morning, February 26, 2018. He was the husband of Janet Oliver Grissom.
Born on May 10, 1943, in Norfolk, Va., he was the son of the late Edmonia Markham and Sidney T. Grissom.
In addition to his wife he is survived by a sister, Shirley Anne Grissom; a daughter, Julena Marr and her husband, William; two step daughters, Margaret Diskin and her husband, Scott of Texas, and Theresa Tilton of Colorado; two sons, Wendell Grissom, Jr. and William Grissom of Fla.; and a number of grandchildren including three special grandchildren, Jonathan, Brittany, and Christopher.
During his lifetime, Wendell was employed in civil service at the naval base. He also worked as a truck driver and packer, lead welder for Boiler Makers at the Norfolk shipyard, a welder for Moore's Machine Shop in Appomattox, and a car painter.
Wendell loved to fly planes with his dad and built a Volkswagen and raced at Creeds. He loved car racing, woodworking, and hunting and was a man of many talents.
Wendell loved his Lord and was a faithful member of Heritage Baptist Church, where he loved his Sunday school class. He will be remembered for his great love of people and his hugs. Wendell will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, March 3, 2018 in the chapel at Heritage Baptist Church with Pastor Zane Abbott, Pastor Jim Tucker, and Pastor Keith Manuel. A private family burial will be held in Spout Spring Baptist Church.
The family wishes to express their appreciation to Central Hospice of the Hill; the staff at Guggenheimers; Dr. Headley, Dr. O'Neil, and the staff of Pearsons Cancer Center; and Dr. Harb Rank for their wonderful care.
