Walter Woodson Davenport, 88, of Gum Branch Road, Appomattox went to be with his Lord on July 27, 2013 at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Walter was born in Cumberland Co., VA February 21, 1925 a son of the late Flossie Ranson and William Cleveland Davenport. He was an active member of Jordan Baptist Church of Lynchburg and retired from Westvaco in 1992. He then went to work for Schewel Furniture Co. and later was a work crew foreman for Buckingham Correctional Facility where he witnessed and led many to Christ while serving there. Walter served his country in the United States Navy from June 19, 1943 until February 19, 1946 during World War II.
He is survived by his loving wife of 21 years, Virginia Maxwell Elder Davenport and her daughters, Carolyn Elder Martin and her husband, Mike; Linda Elder Rice and her husband, Andy; and Audrey Elder Booth and her husband, Terry; grandchildren, Melissa Martin, Shane Martin and his fiancé, Sherry, Joey Martin, Smitty Rice, Kade Booth and Madi Booth; two great-grandchildren, Jayden and Lyric Rice.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM Wednesday July 31, 2013 at Jordan Baptist Church, 3708 Parkwood Avenue, Lynchburg by Dr. Melvin Campbell. Burial will follow at 3:30 PM in Pamplin Community Cemetery with military rites accorded by American Legion Post #104 and V.F.W. #9855 combined honor guard.
The family will receive friends at Robinson Funeral Home from 7-8:30 PM Tuesday night July 30, 2013 and at other times at the residence.
