Wallace G. Haley
Wallace Greer Haley, 87, of Michael Avenue, Ferrum, VA, died at his residence Thursday August 27, 2015. He was the husband of Mary Jane Lucas Haley for 49 years.
Wallace was born In Big Stick, WV a son of the late Goldie Brown and Robert Bruce Haley, Sr. and moved to Appomattox when he was eight years old. He graduated from Appomattox High School May 26, 1944 and then attended Phillips Business College for the next two years. Wallace began a long career in the grocery business, first in Haley's Grocery Store, later at Appomattox Frozen Food Locker and the at Wilbun's Supermarket until he retired on August 13, 1993. After retirement he worked for School Pictures, Inc.
Wallace was a softball pitcher for the Oakville team for many years and one Saturday night he pitched five games in a row in Lynchburg and won them all. Wallace was a great bowler. He ran the Bowling Alley in Appomattox for J.E. (Dutch) Jamerson, Sr. until it was torn down. He has many bowling trophies that he won over the years, two he particularly was very proud of the WLVA-TV Champion Bowler.
Fishing was another one of his past times. He enjoyed the time he spent at his cabin in Deltaville, VA and loved to take people fishing.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert B. (Bobby) Haley, Jr. and Lawrence G. Haley.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Martha B. Bowling and husband, Paul, two grandchildren, Eric Edward and Haley Marie Bowling all of Ferrum.
A funeral service will be held 3pm Sunday August 30, 2015 at Robinson Funeral Home officiated by Rev. Mary White and the Rev. Mark Richardson. Burial will follow in Liberty Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
