Rev. William Carlton Smith, Sr., 81, of Cawthorne St., Appomattox, died Saturday, March 25, 2017, in Raleigh, NC. He was the husband of the late Janet Rooker Smith.
Born in Lynchburg, Va., on March 30, 1935, he was a son of the late Reva Turns and Otis C. Smith. He was a member of Rocks Baptist Church and Falling River Country Club. He received an Associate Degree in engineering from RPI, a Bachelor's of Science in Marketing from VCU, a Masters of Divinity from Southeastern Seminary in Wake Forest, N.C., and a Degree in Ministry from North Carolina Baptist. Carlton served as pastor for Berea Baptist Church in Trevilians, Va., Listra Baptist Church in Chapel Hill, N.C., Jefferson Street Baptist in Roanoke, Va., and Southside Baptist Church in Florence, S.C.
He is survived by three sons, William Carlton Smith, Jr. and his wife, Rhonda of Las Vegas, Nevada, Louis Bryan Smith and wife, Kim of Hampstead, N.C., and Ashley Heath Smith and wife, Nancy of Winnabow, NC; his wife, Lois Smith; eight grandchildren, Stephanie Smith, Michelle Smith, Rebecca Smith all of Wilmington, N.C., Shannon Scherer and her husband, Talon of Leland, N.C., Jacob Smith and his wife, Darby of Boone, N. C., Lauren Smith of Hampstead, N.C., Jared Smith of Leland, N.C., and Tyler Smith of Hampstead, N.C.; a great granddaughter, Ivy Smith; two brothers, Calvin Smith and wife, Janice of Appomattox and Robert W. Smith and Rosie of Cape May, N.J.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A committal service will be held at 3 p.m., Thursday, March 30, 2017, at New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m., in New Hope Baptist Church by Rev. Ron Moore and Rev. Lyn Anderson.
The family will receive friends at Robinson Funeral Home Wednesday from 7 until 8:30 p.m. and other times at the residence.
