Verta Martin Banton, 79, of Lime Plant Rd., Appomattox, died Thursday, January 12, 2012, in Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of the late Mason E. Banton.
Born in Appomattox County, on January 17, 1932, she was a daughter of the late John Graydon and Nellie Moore Martin. She was an active member of Mount Comfort United Methodist Church where she was involved in the United Methodist Women and the Methodist Youth Fellowship, sang in the choir and taught Sunday school. Verta was a farmer, a partner in the Oakville Farm Supply, and a substitute mail carrier for Rt. 3 Appomattox for over 20 years.
She is survived by one son, Victor Banton and his fiancée, Terry; three granddaughters, Tori Banton and her partner, Phillip Radcliffe of Lynchburg, April Godsey and her husband, Aaron, and Heather Banton all of Appomattox,; three great-grandchildren, Lucas and Zoe Radcliffe and Lily Godsey; two brothers, Warren C. Martin of Lynchburg and Calvin H. (Butch) Martin and his wife, Amy of Gladstone; a sister-in-law, Alice C. Martin of Lynchburg; her canine companion, Mindy and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, R. Clayton Martin.
Funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m., Sunday, January 15, 2012, at Mount Comfort United Methodist Church by the Rev. Larry Mann with burial following in the Martin Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends at her home.
