Thurman Earl Lawson, 87, of Hummingbird Lane, Spout Spring, died Saturday, January 20, 2018, in Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born in Stanardsville, Va., in Greene County, on May 14, 1930, he was a son of the late Sadie Shiflett and Jesse Lawson. He was predeceased by his wives, Sarah Cyrus Lawson and Helen Booker Lawson; two brothers, Jesse Lawson, Jr. and Melvin Lawson; and a step-son, Rex Bumgarner.
He is survived by three children, Michael E. Lawson and wife, Carolyn of Spout Spring, Rodney L. Lawson and wife, Donna of Concord, and Pam L. Mann and husband, William of Appomattox; three step-children, Betty Wilkins and husband, Gordon of Forest, Linda Lampman-Ebert and husband, Hugh of Columbia, S. C., and Kenneth Bumgarner and wife, Patty of Amherst; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Thurman enjoyed life on the railroad, retiring from Norfolk and Southern Railroad where he worked for over 37 years. He was a member of Reedy Spring Baptist Church. He loved Lynchburg Hillcats Baseball, the Red Barn, Lyle Thomas', camping, and NASCAR Racing.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Tuesday, January 23, 2018, at Reedy Spring Baptist Church by the Rev. Dan Davis. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday from 7 until 8:30 p.m. and other times at the residence.
