Thomas W. Chalfant, Sr.
Thomas W. Chalfant, Sr., known as "Tom C." to friends, age 90. Has passed on to the Lord on November 9, 2016 at his home in Appomattox, VA from heart failure. He was born on November 1, 1926 in Athens, Ohio to Quentin and Parney Chalfant who preceded him along with his sisters Betty Slominski and Nancy Hoover. He leaves behind his sons Thomas Jr. (Michele) and Steven (Laurel); grandchildren Noelle, Timothy, Michele, Steven Jr., and Justin; great-grandchildren Amanda, Kylie, Dominick, Angelina and Zachary all residing in New Jersey.
The era of the late 1920's was an economic disaster making the family move from Ohio, first to Pennsylvania, then to northern New Jersey, looking for work. Tom C. was an exceptional athlete, participating in most sports, especially football. Because the family moved again within New Jersey, he played for two (2) schools, Harrison H.S. and our Lady of Good Counsel in Newark. His junior season Good Counsel only played six games due to WWII, but in only those six games he was the state's highest scorer. If such an award existed then, he would likely have been the "Player of the year."
He quit school to go to work as a carpenter with his father and married his high school sweetheart Ella May Peakman. She preceded him in 2005 after 60 years of marriage. He was drafted into the U.S. Army serving with the 158th Regimental Combat Infantry unit, known as the "Bushmasters" spending most of his time in the Phillipines and the Occupation Army in Japan. Tom and Ella moved from New Jersey to Appomattox in 1989.
Tom C. was an artist, painting oil on canvas for more than 60 years and most recently doing ink drawings. Many of his works are in offices and homes around Appomattox. He retired three times; 1st after 33 years with the USPS; then after 10 years as an appointed United Methodist Minister; and finally after 15 years as the morning manager of the Health and Wellness Gym.
All praise be to the Lord God for he is not only great and good, but truly awesome!
