Appomattox: Thomas Hunter Dickerson, 94, of Oakleigh Ave., died Wednesday, October 31, 2007 in Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of the late Thelma Morris Dickerson.
Born in Appomattox County, January 4, 1913, he was a son of the late Jesse Elijah Dickerson and Vara Agnus Howerton Dickerson. Until his retirement, Mr. Dickerson owned and operated Dickerson Clothing Store and managed the local DMV office from his store. He enjoyed maintaining his family farm until the time of his death. He proudly served his country in the US Army for 4 ½ years during WW II, in which Hitler's defeat was the crowning event. Hunter was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church and a former member of the American Legion Post #104.
He is survived by two sisters, Sara Louise Carnefix of Appomattox and Ethel Irene Martin of Richmond; a brother-in-law, Howard Robertson of Altavista; nieces and nephew, Debbie and Eddie Coberly, Diane and Robert Earls, Janet Walters, Gail and Kelly Smith, Jean and Weldon Eaddy, Anna and Scott Tyler, and Joel and Virginia Carnefix; and ten loving caregivers, Ella Godsey, Betty Campbell, Tammy Godsey, Nancy Mayberry, Aileen Hodges, Edith Harris, Doris Martin, Shannon Mayberry, Shelly Harvey, and Jessica Driskill.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary A. Dickerson, Anna Burton Dickerson Robertson, and Margaret Janet (Jane) Dickerson Wilbun.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m., Friday, November 2, 2007 in Memorial United Methodist Church by the Rev. Bruce Johnson and the Rev. Cameron Smith. Burial will follow in Liberty Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the residence on Thursday.
