Obituary

Shirley Elsie Harris O'Brien, 85, of Appomattox, passed away Saturday, March 12, 2016. Born May 29, 1930, in Vera (Appomattox County), she was the daughter of the late John Daniel Harris, Sr. and Elsie Warner Baber Harris and the youngest and longest survivor of 11 siblings. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Franklin O'Brien, and one son, Louis Edward O'Brien. She is survived by her daughter, Linda O'Brien Gregory (Howard), and her sons, Roger Lynn O'Brien (Lisa), and David Franklin O'Brien (Karen). In addition, she is survived by ten grandchildren: Michael Howard Gregory (Jenny), Kimberly Gregory Dalton (Mike), Tiffany O'Brien Wilkerson (Matt), Christina O'Brien Ulip (Thomas), Whitney O'Brien, Lane O'Brien, Winston O'Brien, Collins O'Brien (Nina-Marie), Clay O'Brien, Colten O'Brien, and five great-grandchildren.

Shirley was a graduate of Vera School and Appomattox High School, class of 1947, and was a life-long resident of Appomattox County. She worked for the Appomattox Garment Company and Appomattox County School System. As a faithful member of New Hope Baptist Church, she was the Assistant Pianist and cherished the friends in her Sunday School class. Her favorite pastimes were making colorful quilts by hand, raising beautiful flowers, and playing the piano.
The Rev. Ron Moore, who faithfully visited Shirley and her family as her health failed, will conduct her funeral service on Wednesday, March 16, 2016, at 11:00 A. M. at New Hope Baptist Church in Vera. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Robinson Funeral Home on Tuesday, March 15, 2016, from 7:00 – 8:30 P. M. and at other times at the home of her daughter, Linda Gregory.

A special thank you to the wonderful, caring, and compassionate staffs at Babcock Manor, Appomattox Health & Rehab, and Centra Hospice of Farmville, who faithfully ministered to her during her illness.
