Sarah Mitchell Giles Burke, 89, formerly of Appomattox, died Sunday, January 10, 2016, in the Masonic Home of Virginia.
Born in Appomattox County, Va., on September 3, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Emily Frances Gunter and Euen Talmadge Mitchell. She was a member of Grace Hills Baptist Church and a former member of Liberty Baptist Church. Sarah worked at Babcock Manor for 30 years prior to that she worked for Appomattox Garment Factory.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Harry Byrd Giles and Richard Leigh Burke, Jr.; three brothers, Vernell Mitchell, William Mitchell, and R. W. (Bobby) Mitchell; and a sister, Hilda M. Bucksey.
She is survived by a daughter, "Scottie" Woody and husband, Buck of Powhatan; a son, John Giles and wife, Brenda of Newport News; a step-son, Jim Burke and wife, Sheryl of Appomattox; three grandchildren, Eric and Cher Giles, David and Robyn Giles, and Ashley W. and Brannon Howle; two step grandchildren, Sam and Kelly Burke and Sandy and Steve McBride; eight great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; a sister-in-law, Geraldine Mitchell; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, January 18, 2016, at Robinson Funeral Home by Dr. Adam Tyler.
