Obituary

Appomattox: Samuel Bragg Waddell, Sr., 83, of Evergreen Ave., died Tuesday, March 14, 2006 in the Drinkard Health Center. He was the husband of the late Barbara Perdue Waddell.
Born in Drakes Branch, January 19, 1923, he was a son of the late William E. and Mabel Harland Waddell. Sam graduated from Randolph Henry High School in Charlotte Courthouse and received a BS degree from Virginia Tech. He was an US Army Paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne serving in World War II and the recipient of the Purple Heart. He jumped in the Normandy invasion in the area surrounding Sainte Mere Eglise, France and was also in the Battle of the Bulge. Sam was a retired Farm Management Agent for the VPI Extension Service, in Appomattox working over a 16 county region advising farmers on business and estate issues facing family farms. He also served as an Extension Agent in Lunenburg County, residing in Kenbridge. He was a member and former President of the Appomattox Lions Club, a member of the Appomattox Planning Commission, a charter member of the Falling River Country Club, and a member of St. Anne's Episcopal Church.
He is survived by two children, Barbara W. Stern of Richmond and Samuel B. Waddell, Jr. and his wife, Julia Glass Waddell of Lynchburg; three grandchildren, Henry F. Stern, II, Laura Marguerite Waddell, and Samuel B. Waddell, III; two sisters, Mabel W. Bowen of Jacksonville, FL and Mary W. Bowen of Richmond; two nephews, Bruce W. Bowen and wife, Sue and Charles D. Waddell; a niece, Diane B. Hardy; and a devoted caregiver, Connie M. Hall.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, William E. Waddell, Jr. and Carroll C. Waddell.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 am, Tuesday, March 21, 2006, at Robinson Funeral Home by the Rev. Mike Ferguson. A reception will follow the service at St. Anne's Episcopal Church.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday from 7-8:30 pm.
