Retired Juvenile and Domestic Relations Judge, William Samson (Sam) Kerr, 69, of Bent Creek, died unexpectedly Monday, December 29, 2008 in Williamsburg. He was the husband of Lola Osborne Kerr.
Born in Roanoke, October 7, 1939, he was a son of the late Howard E. and Gertrude Wilkerson Kerr. In 1957, Sam graduated from Appomattox High School. He graduated from the University of Richmond in 1962, where he was a member of the ROTC and went on to continue his education at TC Williams School of Law where he was president of the Student Bar Association and a member of ODK. He was a Captain in the US Army serving in the Judge Advocate Corp in Chicago and Arizona. In 1969, after leaving the Army he was employed by McGuire Woods Battle and Booth in Richmond.
In 1972, he was appointed by Circuit Judge George Abbitt as Commonwealth Attorney for Appomattox County, serving in that position until he entered private practice of law in 1984. In 1995, he was appointed to the 10th Judicial Circuit as Juvenile and Domestic Relations Judge where he served until his retirement in 2004.
He was appointed by the Chief Justice of the Virginia Supreme Court to the Judicial Performance and Review Commission in 2008.
Sam was an active outdoorsman participating in canoeing, biking, hunting, and running. He was a member or the Virginia Bar Association, the Float Fishermen of Virginia, and the Blue Ridge River Runners.
In addition to his wife, Lola he is survived by; two daughters and their mother, Anne Leigh Kerr of Richmond, Amy Watkins Boyd and her husband, Andrew of Williamsburg, and Anne Abbitt Kerr of Richmond; three grandchildren, Corinne, Camille, and Stuart Boyd; a sister, Betty Kerr; a nephew, John Kerr and two step-daughters, Sydni Jackson and Sharon J. Syrek.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm, Thursday, January 1, 2009 in Grace Hills Baptist Church. A reception will be held at the church following the service to allow time for family and friends to visit and remember the joy and laughter Sam brought into our lives.
