Obituary

Ruth Hawkins Webb, 92, formerly of Appomattox, died Wednesday, June 11, 2014, at The Summit in Lynchburg, where she had been a resident for the past five years. She was the wife of Martin Luther Webb, who predeceased her in 2005.

Ruth was born on April 17, 1922, in Roanoke, Virginia. She was the only child of the late Beulah Kyle and Ralph Leslie Hawkins.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Douglas M. and Sheila F. Webb of Appomattox and granddaughters, Kathleen R. Webb of Alexandria and Mallory J. Webb of Lynchburg.

Ruth attended Mary Baldwin College and was a 1943 graduate of Roanoke College. She was a retired school teacher, having taught in Vinton and Appomattox County schools for over 20 years. She was the first female member of the Appomattox County School Board, serving from 1971-1983. In addition, she served eight years on the Central Virginia Community College Board from 1986-1994.

Ruth was a past president of the Appomattox Woman's Club, the Appomattox Garden Club, and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was also a member of the Appomattox County Historical Society and the Retired Teachers Association of Appomattox County. Ruth was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church, having served on the Administrative Board, a member of the United Methodist Women, and was a former Sunday School teacher.

The family wishes to thank the staff of The Summit in Lynchburg, as well as Centra Hospice, for the care and support shown to Ruth and her family.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, June 13, at Liberty Cemetery by the Rev. Russell Cheatham.

The family will receive friends tonight (Thursday) at Robinson Funeral Home from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Memorial United Methodist Church Building Fund, P. O. Box 9, Appomattox, VA 24522.
