Roberta Lee (Bertie) Burge Baird, 77, of Pumping Station Road, Appomattox, died Sunday, December 26, 2010, at her residence. She was the wife of the late William Nelson Baird.

Born in Appomattox County, on July 14, 1933, she was a daughter of the late Elizabeth Bell and William Fletcher Burge, Sr. Bertie grew up in Trinity United Methodist Church and was a retired waitress.

She is survived by two sons, William Chernault and wife, Raiza and Michael Chernault all of Appomattox; three daughters, Frances Lloyd and husband, Chris of Lynchburg, Liz Harlow and husband, Sonny, and Bonnie Hendriks of Appomattox; five grandchildren, Lance Chernault, Sarah Orlando, Brooklyn Pribble, Timothy Scruggs, and Joey Hendriks; four great-grandchildren, Sydney and Lacey Chernault and Isbel and Timothy Scruggs; two sisters, Lelia Martin and husband, Dick and Louise Roach and husband, Johnny of Appomattox; sister-in-law, Eleanor B. (T T) Burge of Gladstone; and a brother-in-law, Sammy Carter of Appomattox.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard (Dick) Burge and Fletcher Burge, Jr. and a sister, Dorothy Carter.

A memorial service will be held 7:00 p.m., Thursday, December 30, 2010, at Robinson Funeral Home with visitation following until 8:30 p.m.
