Robert Elwood "Nice" Torrence, Sr., 91, died Thursday, April 17, 2008, in Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Julia Fielder Torrence.
Born in Concord, December 27, 1916, he was the son of the late Calvin Dinwiddie Torrence and Lois Cheatham Torrence. Robert was a member of Blue Ridge Community Church and a retired Rural Mail Carrier. He served his country as a member of the U.S. Army in WWII and was active in the invasion of Omaha Beach on D Day.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons; Woody Torrence and wife Nancy, of Forest, Ronnie Torrence and wife Mary of Concord, Victor Torrence and wife Wanda of Concord; one daughter, Lois Phillips and husband Sam of Concord; one brother, Gordon Torrence and wife Audrey of Bowling Green; eight grandchildren, Matt and Charity Torrence, Jonathan and Holly Torrence, Nathan and Sarah Torrence, Josh and Courtney Phillips, Katie and Seth Bigham, Brent Phillips, Haley Torrence, Lyndsey and Morgan Croft; seven great-grandchildren, Isaiah, Cade, Eden, Nahla, Kinley, Cambre and Lillian.
He was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister.
Funeral Services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, April 19, 2008 at Blue Ridge Community Church by Dr. Woody Torrence. A private family burial will be held.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
