Robert I. (Bob) Coleman, Jr., died March 17, 2015 in Cummings, Ga. He was born in Newport News, Va., on May 7, 1926, to the late Hazel Paige and Robert I. Coleman, Sr.
Soon after graduation from Newport News High School, he joined the United States Marine Corps and proudly served his country during World War II. After the war, Bob played football for the University of Alabama and graduated with a BS, a Master's degree in Education and a six year certificate in Administration. While in Tuscaloosa he met Margaret, a local beauty, who became the love of his life and his wife for 66 years.
They moved to Chamblee, GA in 1964, where they resided for some 45 years. Bob was employed by DeKalb County Board of Education and became a much loved and respected elementary school principal for 30 years. He also served 11 years as a Chamblee City Councilman.
He retired to Cumming, GA and was an avid reader, well versed in history, especially the Civil War. Bob also really enjoyed football and most all spending time with his family.
Bob is survived by his beloved wife, the former Mary Margaret Griffin and their three daughters, Robi, Rhea and Rena; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Beverly Booker and Jackie Pearson, both of Virginia. He was preceded in death by his sons-in-law, Eddie Davis and Cliff Edwards.
A memorial service was held at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 19, 2015 in the chapel of McDonald and Son Funeral Home. a funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 21, 2015, in Liberty Chapel Baptist Church with burial following in the Booker Family Cemetery, Gladstone, VA, that has been in his family since the late 1700's.
