Obituary

Robert Cary Franklin, 65, of Echo Hollow Farm, Rustburg, died Wednesday, August 20, 2014, at his residence. He was born in Lynchburg, on May 31, 1949, a son of the late Nancy Woodall and Edward Davis Franklin.

He worked in the insurance industry for 30 years; semi-retiring to farm and raise beef cattle in Campbell County. Robert was a 25 year member of the Rustburg Ruritan Club where he served as President and Treasurer during his membership. He was honored with the Ruritan of the Year Award in 1982. From its inception, he served on the Board of Directors for Rustburg Rescue Squad and was an honorary member of the Concord Volunteer Fire Department, volunteering many years with their annual fund raisers. He was also a member of the Tobacco Row Chitlin Club.

Robert loved to dance, share great jokes, and never met a stranger. He has donated the "gift of life" over 8 gallons of blood to the VA Red Cross.

He is survived by his best friend and wife, Martha Newman Franklin; three sons, Robert (Robbie) D. Franklin of Rustburg, Johnathan E. Franklin and wife, Sarah of Concord, and Jeremy L. Franklin of Rustburg; 10 grandchildren; a brother, Kenneth E. Franklin and wife, Carolyn of Concord; two sisters, Irene Mays of Rustburg and Shelby Hughes and husband, Billy of Rustburg; his best friend and right hand man, Mike Munsterman and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Wendy Marie Franklin.

The family will receive friends at Robinson Funeral Home Friday, August 22, 2014, from 4:00 – 7:30 p.m. and other times at the residence.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 23, 2014, in New Concord Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Patrick Pillow. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family would like to express their gratitude to John Hopkins Hospital and Susan Sartorius-Mergenthaler for their care of Robert.
