Riley Thomas Megginson, 94, of Appomattox, died Friday, July 17, 2009. He is survived by his devoted wife of 69 years, Edythe Martin Megginson.
Riley was born in Appomattox County, June 24, 1915, a son of the late Samuel Thomas Megginson and Virginia Spradlin Megginson. He was a retired farmer, was employed at the Farmers Tobacco Warehouse in Lynchburg for over 30 years and was a Baer & Sons Memorials representative. Riley was a faithful and dedicated member of Mount Comfort United Methodist Church and served as a trustee for many years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter Virginia M. Kern and husband, John of Forest; a son, R. T. Megginson, Jr. and wife, Patricia of Appomattox; five grandchildren, John Thomas Kern, III (Tommy) and wife, Sharon, Penny M. Escobedo and husband, Alex, Pam M. Mayberry and husband, Greg, Vicki K. Garrett and husband Jerald, Paula M. McNutt and husband, Chris; seven great-grandchildren, J.W. and Jennifer Garrett, Heather and Chase Mayberry, Emily and Austin Escobedo and Ashton Kern; two brothers, Johnny Megginson, and Wallace Megginson and wife Margaret of Appomattox; three sisters, Edith Williams of Appomattox, Jean Nash of Brandon, MS., and Anna Phelps and husband Clarence of Crewe.
Three sisters preceded him in death, Molly Megginson, Lucy Gilliam, and Nancy Hughes.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 20, 2009 at Mt. Comfort United Methodist Church by the Rev. Robert Thorne. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 4-6:00 p.m. today, at Robinson Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
