Richard Lewis "Dick" Wingfield, Sr., 82, of Virginia Ave. died Saturday, August 21, 2010 at his residence. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Julia Isabel "Izzie" McGhee, formerly of Lynchburg, whom he married on St. Patrick's Day, March 17, 1956.
Born June 8, 1928, in Appomattox, he was the son of the late James Julian and Zelia Jones Wingfield. He was a member of Liberty Baptist Church and a graduate of Appomattox High School, Bluefield College and Lynchburg College; he was a former Postmaster for Appomattox and had retired from Limitorque Corp. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as a Supply Sergeant.
As a member and officer in various organizations; he along with Richard Carter and Billy Conner organized the Appomattox Little League Baseball teams, worked with the Jaycees, served two terms on the Appomattox Town Council, and was Chairman of the Appomattox Republican Party for many years and the Appomattox Electoral Board.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four sons and daughters-in-law and eight grandchildren: Richard "Rick" L. Wingfield, Jr. and Kris, and their children, Roxanne and Richard of Appomattox; Thomas "Tom" Mackie Wingfield and Cheryl and their children, Philip and Helen of Roanoke Rapids, N.C.,; Andrew "Andy" Hayes Wingfield and Debbie and their children, Brooke and Brandon; and Robert "Bobby" Julian Wingfield and Renee and their children, Mary Beth and Katie, all of Appomattox; and four Purcell great granddaughters.
Dick is also survived by two brothers, James Ray Wingfield and his wife, Mary Vance, of Appomattox and Fred C. Wingfield and his wife, Judy, of Madison Heights; two sisters, Joyce W. Bingham, Lynchburg and Betty W. Witt and her husband, W.E., of Lynchburg; two uncles, Lester Wingfield and his wife, Flossie, Appomattox, and Herman Wingfield, Pamplin; and many of nieces, nephews and relatives.
Graveside services will be conducted by The Rev. Dr. Robert Alderman on Tuesday, August 24, 2010 at 4:00 P.M. in Liberty Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, it was Dick's request that memorial contributions be made to the Appomattox Community Park Fund, PO Box 863, Appomattox, VA 24522.
