IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Reese Marvin
Thompson, Jr.
April 8, 1945 – August 10, 2018
Reese Marvin Thompson, Jr., 73, of Rustburg, died Friday, August 10, 2018, at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Born in Lynchburg, VA on April 8, 1945, he was a son of the late Gracie Virginia Riddle and Reese Marvin Thompson, Sr. He was a retired electrician with Babcock & Wilcox/BWXT, a passionate high school and college baseball official, an avid outdoorsman and farmer.
He is survived by a son, Reese M. "Mark" Thompson, III and wife, Elizabeth; a daughter, Melanie B. Thompson and Barry W. Doyle all of Lynchburg; two sisters, Theresa Gale Midgley and Catherine T. Hamlett and husband, Robert all of Rustburg; nieces, nephews, and cousins; and many close friends that he also considered family.
He was preceded in death by his brother Ralph Edwin Thompson and brother-in-law James "Jim" Alfred Midgley.
The family expresses profound gratitude to all who supported and cared for him. Many have said he was a like a father to them – we feel there is no greater compliment. There is nothing he would not do for those he loved.
A memorial service will be held 2 p.m., Wednesday, August 15, 2018 at New Concord Presbyterian Church with Rev. Janice Fraser officiating. As he desired, he will be buried next to his parents. The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, Gale, Tuesday, August 14, 2018, from 6 to 8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donation to Patrick Henry Boys and Girls Home, PO Box 1398, Brookneal, VA 24528, Lynchburg Area Veterans Council, Inc., PO Box 1104, Forest, VA 24551, or Phi Mu Foundation, 400 Westpark Drive, Peachtree City, GA 30269.
