Obituary

Rawlings Clayton Martin, 80, of Salisbury Circle, died Saturday, May 23, 2009. He was the loving husband of Alice Clapp Martin for 61 years.
Born in Appomattox County on August 5, 1928 he was a son of the late John Graydon and Nellie Moore Martin.
Clayton was a life long member of Mt. Comfort United Methodist Church where he was an active member for many years serving in numerous capacities.
For many years he operated Martin General Merchandise and a wood and railroad tie business at Caskie, VA.; he was a co-owner of M & M Dry Cleaners. Clayton was an avid farmer who enjoyed raising beef cattle and tobacco.
Clayton served for 30 years on the Central Virginia Electric Cooperative Board and served as Chairman of the Board for eight of those years; he also served on the Board of Public Welfare and the Electoral Board of Appomattox County.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Lynn M. Spangler of Goode; Gregg C. Martin and his wife Paula of Appomattox and Yvonne M. Heath and her husband David of Goodview; 2 grandchildren, Matthew B. Foster and his wife Kary of Evington and B. Kyle Martin of Appomattox; 3 great-grandchildren, Allison, Katie and Madeline; his sister, Verta M. Banton of Appomattox; two brothers, Warren C. Martin of Lynchburg and Calvin H. (Butch) Martin and his wife Amy of Gladstone and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Leroy Spangler and a brother-in-law, Mason Banton.
A memorial service will be conducted in Mt. Comfort United Methodist Church on Tuesday May 26, 2009 at 4:00 P.M. by the Rev. Robert J. Thorne.
The family will visit with friends following the service.
