Ralph Harold Smith Sr., 82, of Appomattox, died Monday, December 29, 2014, in Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Phyllis Lucado Smith for 62 years.
Born in Appomattox County, Va., on January 28, 1932, he was a son of the late Carrie Martin and C. Roland Smith Sr. He was a member of Thomas Terrace Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. Ralph was a 1951 graduate of Appomattox High School, a US Army veteran serving in Korea, a retired supervisor for Westvaco Printing Division, and a 20 year member of the American Legion Post #104.
In addition to his wife he is survived by a son, R. Harold Smith Jr. and wife, Laura of Chesterfield; two daughters, Martha S. Reynolds and husband, Ray of Wilson, N.C. and Amy S. Davis and husband, Larry of Chesterfield; seven grandchildren, Michelle R. Pessarra and Aaron, Amanda R. Ney and Eric, Allyson S. Waddell and John, Sarah D. Nichols and Daniel, Lauren S. Brown and Josh, Brittney and Cody White; six great-grandchildren, Isaiah, Sydney, and Travis Pessarra, Titus, Tenaya and Topanga Ney, and soon-to-be, Audrey Nichols; a sister and brother-in-law, Daphine S. and Curtis Moore of Lynchburg; and sisters-in-law, Dorothy Smith and Norine S. Smith and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Charles R. Smith Jr., Christian B. Smith and Joel Watkins Smith and two sisters, Mollie S. Rogers and Mildred S. Moore.
A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m., Thursday, January 1, 2015, in Thomas Terrace Baptist Church, 10660 Richmond Hwy., Lynchburg by Pastor Mark Grooms. Burial will follow at 12:30 p.m. in New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery, 6227 Old Courthouse Rd., Appomattox with military rites accorded by American Legion Post #104 and V.F.W. # 9855 combined honor guard.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 31, 2014 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Robinson Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
