Rachel "Mema" Lee Guill Waddell, 93, passed away Saturday, August 20, 2016. She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 50 years, Olaf L. Waddell; a son, Danny K. Waddell; four brothers; and five sisters.
Rachel was born in Appomattox, Va., on November 4, 1922, the daughter of the late Myrtle McCormick and W. Herman Guill. She was a 1940 graduate of Appomattox High School and a graduate of Allen's Beauty School of Lynchburg. She owned and operated Rachel's Beauty Shop in Rustburg for 30 years. She was very active in her community. Her accomplishments included being elected state president of Virginia Home Demonstration (now Virginia Cooperative Extension) and Virginia United Methodist Women. She was a former member of Rustburg UMC and a present member of Memorial UMC.
Following her husband's retirement, Rachel and Olaf became "snowbirds", wintering in St. Petersburg, Fla. They enjoyed traveling all over the country and quickly made friends wherever they went.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Patricia W. Taylor; son, Bobby K. Waddell (Sue); grandchildren, Grant Taylor, Kerry Covington(Brian), Kim Lemburg (Phil), Jeremy Waddell (Gina), Lori Ann Waddell, Chris Waddell (Billie Jo), and Nicholas Waddell (Sarah). Mema's later years were filled with joy and smiles from spending time with her beloved great grandchildren, Anna and Amanda Taylor; Rachel, Noah, Eden, and Jason Covington; Christina and Alexander "Ozzie" Lemburg; Grey and Nash Waddell; and Avery Waddell. Rachel is also survived by a sister, Ruth Smith "(Fred) and numerous other family and friends.
The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to Rachel's longtime friend, honorary sister and caregiver, Freda Rosser. Special thanks also to the wonderful staff at the Elms of Lynchburg for their car of Rachel these last few years.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m., Tuesday, August 23, 2016 at Robinson Funeral Home by the Rev. Russell Cheatham. Burial will follow at 3 p.m. in the Cumbie Cemetery, Rustburg.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7-8:30 p.m., Monday, August 22, 2016 and other times at the home her son, Bobby Waddell.
