R. C. "Cal" Moore, Jr. took his "last flight" June 29, 2011 at Our Lady of Hope Health Center in Richmond, Virginia. Calhoun was born in Stapleton, Virginia, on the James River, July 8, 1918.
Through the years his two greatest passions were airplanes and automobiles. He graduated from Appomattox High School. Later he attended Kansas University in Pittsburg, Kansas.
He soloed in a Taylor Cub Aircraft at the age of sixteen and then became the youngest "barn stormer" in Virginia at age eighteen flying a Travel Air 2000 plane.
During five years of service in World War II "Cal" was a member of the 9th Air Force, 439th Troop Carrier Group and 93rd Squadron in Europe. He flew C-47 Aircraft and C.G. 4A Combat Gliders participating in three airborne operations: Normandy with the 101st, Holland with the 82nd, and Rhine Crossing with the 17th Airborne.
He married Roma Saul on October 12, 1945 who passed away on Memorial Day 1989.
After the War he worked in the sales and engineering department of General Motors. "Cal" retired in 1974 enabling him to enjoy his hometown of Appomattox and fishing in Deltaville, Virginia.
He is survived by his son Robert C. Moore III and his wife Anne, a daughter Margaret M. Montgomery and her husband Steve, 5 grandchildren: Kelly Moore, Ashley Stevens and her husband, Chris, Carter Moore, Brian Montgomery and his wife, Jessica, and Rob Montgomery, and 4 great-grandchildren: Andrew, Austen and Hope Stevens and Brendan Montgomery.
The funeral will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, July 2nd, at the Robinson Funeral Home in Appomattox, Virginia, with the Rev. Jeunee Cunningham officiating. A visitation will follow the service.
