For 85 years, the family and friends of Monroe Dyess were blessed with his presence. On Saturday, May 10, he entered the gates of heaven to join his beloved wife, Frances Jennings Dyess, who preceded him there on July 21, 2003. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Ratliff and Lillie Seay Dyess; brothers, Joseph Dyess, Ervin Dyess and wife Jane, and an infant brother; brothers-in-law, Jack Dunbar, Thomas Jennings and wife Eileen, George Jennings and wife Ellen; and sister-in-law, Agnes Jennings Spain and husband Charlie.
Monroe is survived by his son, Major General Robert M. Dyess, Jr. and wife Sharon Hall Dyess of Lorton; daughter, Mary Dyess Babcock and husband Brad Babcock of Concord; granddaughter, Marilyn Elise Dyess of Williamsburg; sister, Ruby D. Dunbar of Centralia, Ill.; sister-in-law, Juanita Dyess of Loxley, Ala. and numerous nieces and nephews, Joe, Patricia, Becky, Mike, Barry, Lisa, Cindy, Jeff, Bruce, Agnes Anne, Charlene, Carolyn, Nancye, Chris, Tom, Lee, Jean, Fred, John, Ann, Scott, Kathryn.
Monroe was a godly man who served faithfully at Hebron Baptist Church in various ways including lifetime deacon, Sunday school teacher, youth leader, and choir member. Earlier in life, he served 2 years in the Army. He was also involved in Gideons International, Ruritans, 4-H , and Farm Bureau in various capacities over the years. Monroe served as the first DARE officer for the Appomattox County Sheriff's Department. He had a special connection with young people and served as a mentor for many through his devotion to God, family and country.

Funeral services will be conducted at Hebron Baptist Church on Thursday, May 15, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. by the Rev. Tom Walker. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 14 from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. at Robinson Funeral Home.
