Raymond Abbitt Coleman, 93, of Horseshoe Rd., Appomattox, died Saturday, August 6, 2016, at Virginia Baptist Hospital. He was the husband of the late Helen Faye Torrence Coleman for 67 years.
Born in Appomattox County, Va., on March 7, 1923, he was a son of the late Lillie Kyle and Leslie Anderson Coleman. He was a former deacon of New Hope Baptist Church and at the time of his death he was the oldest living male member of the church. Abbitt served in the US Army during WW II in the Supreme Headquarters, Allied Expeditionary Force and was owner and operator of Cedar Lane Dairy for 41 years. He was a member of the Monroe Masonic Lodge #301 A.F. & A. M. and served as a past master of the lodge.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Nelwyn and Arthur Morris; a son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Fay Coleman; a brother, Leslie Kyle Coleman all of Appomattox; two grandchildren and their spouses, Sara and Donnie Lee Almond and Ryan and Ashley Coleman; six great grandchildren, Dagan, Coleman, Sawyer, and Walker Almond, and Kenleigh and Trafton Coleman; and his farming buddy, Johnny Goin. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Adam Morris.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m., Tuesday, August 9, 2016, at New Hope Baptist Church by the Rev. Ron Moore, with masonic rites and military rites. The family will receive friends at the homes of his children, Nelwyn and Keith.
