IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Philip L.
Nelson
February 19, 1947 – August 24, 2018
Philip L. Nelson
Philip Larry Nelson, 71, of Concord, passed away peacefully, following a short battle with cancer, on Friday, August 24, 2018 at home surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Carolyn A. Nelson.
Born on February 19, 1947, in Lynchburg, Va., he was the son of Charles Reggie Blankenship of Lynchburg and the late Virginia Tweedy Blankenship.
He graduated from E. C. Glass High School and was a proud veteran of the United States Navy. He was employed by Virginia Fibre (Greif, Inc.) for many years; however, his proudest accomplishment was the creation and continued growth of his own company, Chestnut Mountain Feed, which was founded in 1991 and still thrives today. Through all of his hard work and accomplishments, he was at his happiest when spending time on his farm and tending to his cattle. He was a member of Thomas Terrace Baptist Church. He will be remembered most for his determination, strong work ethic and sense of humor.
In addition to his wife and father, Philip is survived by a daughter, Christina "Tina" Blankenship (Johnny) of Spout Spring; a son, Troy Nelson (Tara) of Concord; two grandchildren, Gunnar Nelson and Carley Nelson; a sister, Linda Ramsey (Doug); a nephew, Doug Ramsey, Jr.; a niece, Penny Downs all of Lynchburg; and his faithful companion, Lacy.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Virginia Tweedy Blankenship.
The family is very grateful for the compassionate care provided by Dr. Kevin Patel and staff at the Alan B. Pearson Cancer Center and Tammy Tweedy of Seven Hills Hospice Care; also, for the outpouring of love and support from neighbors, friends and family extended to Philip during his recent illness.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., on Monday, August 27, 2018 at Thomas Terrace Baptist Church, Concord, with Pastor Mark Grooms officiating. Interment will follow in Hebron Baptist Church Cemetery, Concord, with Military rites accorded by American Legion Post #104 and V. F.W. #9855 combined honor guard.
The family will receive friends at Robinson Funeral Home, Appomattox, on Sunday, August 26, 2018 from 5 until 7 p.m., and other times at the residence of Troy and Tara Nelson, 642 Porter House Road, Concord.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Concord Rescue Squad, PO Box 48, Concord, VA 24538 or Alan B. Pearson Cancer Center, Centra Foundation, 1920 Atherholt Road, Lynchburg, VA 24501.
