Appomattox: The Rev. Melvin Eugene Winters, 73, died Saturday August 6, 2005 in Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Phyllis Meekins Winters.
Born in Blackhawk, Mississippi, September 3, 1931 he was a son to the late Mary Carroll and John Calvin Winters.
Reverend Winter's pastoral duties allowed him to serve churches in Mississippi, North Carolina and Virginia, including New Chapel Baptist Church of Rustburg and Flat Creek Baptist Church of Lynchburg. He was the first Director of Missions of Dan River Baptist Association in Halifax, Virginia, as well as the first Director of Missions of Appomattox Baptist Association. After retirement he became the Intentional Interim Pastor of churches in North Carolina and Virginia. He was active in community affairs and held offices in denominational organizations including President of the Virginia State Directors of Missions. As well, he held offices in the Center for Congregational Health of Winston Salem, North Carolina, an organization devoted to the health and well being of churches and their congregations.
In addition to his wife, Reverend Winters is survived by a son Kristopher C. Winters of Lynchburg; a brother J.C. Winters of Natchez, MS; seven sisters Lucille Armstrong of Clarksdale, MS; Stella Acy of Coila, MS; Agnes Broadhead of Clarksdale, MS; Myrtle Nall of Mobile, AL: Thelma Meredith of Clarksdale, MS: Belma Winters of Greenwood, MS; Mildred Robison of Martin, TN.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, August 9, 2005 at New Chapel Baptist Church in Rustburg by the Rev. Wes Williams, the Rev. Frank Crawford and the Rev. Darden Battle with burial following in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 – 8:30 PM tonight at Robinson Funeral Home and other times at his residence.
