Obituary
Melvin Glyn Lyon, 81, of Concord, died Monday, September 8, 2014, at his home with his wife of 56 years, Jane Franklin Lyon by his side. Mel was a very thoughtful and loving husband and uncle and he will be deeply missed by his family.
Born in Monroe, VA, on January 17, 1933, he was the son of the late Mamie Hume and John Lewis Lyon. He was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church and a US Air Force Veteran. In 1976, he was a Cum Laude graduate from CVCC earning a degree in business and attended Lynchburg College from 1976- 1982. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge Reedy Spring 203 A.F. & A.M. since 1960 and retired from C & P Telephone of Virginia, now Verizon in 1992.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a nephew, Gary Michael Lyon of Richmond; two great-nieces, Shelly Boyer of Harrisonburg and Elizabeth Lyon of El Paso, Texas; two great-nephews, Samuel (Sammy) Lyon and Jonathan Lyon, both of Richmond: sister-in-law, Emma Lou Lyon of Lynchburg; nieces, Kaye Franklin of Lynchburg and Donna Franklin of Concord; nephew, Tom Franklin, Jr. of Concord; two great-nieces, Jennifer Jones and husband, Ronald of Appomattox and Miranda Franklin of Lynchburg; great-nephew, Thomas (Mackie) Franklin, III of Lynchburg; great-great-nieces and nephew, Alexis, Grace, Addison, and Jacob Jones of Appomattox; and sister-in-law, Helen Franklin of Concord.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Rev. Louis Carlton Lyon.
A funeral service will be held 4 p.m., Wednesday, September 10, 2014, in Bethlehem United Methodist Church by the Rev. Dan Dibble. Burial will follow in Concord Cemetery with military rites accorded by American Legion Post #104 and V. F.W. #9855 combined honor guard and Masonic Rites. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service and other times at the residence, 9245 Village Hwy., Concord.
