Mary Payne Strickland, 85, of Payne Place, Gladstone, died Sunday, May 26, 2019, at Appomattox Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Born in Nelson County, on July 21, 1933, she was a daughter of the late Bessie Walton and Francis Marion Payne. In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by six brothers, Marion, Eugene, Gordon, Claiborne, Joe, and Walter Payne, and a sister, Ida Watts. She was the wife of the late Sam Bailey and the late James Malcolm Strickland.

Mary will be fondly remembered by her step-children, numerous nieces and nephews, and friends. She was known for her creativity, gardening, caring spirit, and her love for shopping at thrift shops.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 28, 2019, at the Payne Family Cemetery, 1164 Payne Place, Gladstone.
