Obituary

Mary Jane Harvey Phelps, 89, of Appomattox, left this earth for her Heavenly home on Thursday, March 9, 2017. She was the wife of Twyman Phelps for 71 years.

Born in Evergreen, VA, on May 13, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Edward Larkin and Manie Clark Harvey. Mary was a member of Red Oak Baptist Church where she had taught Sunday school and was involved in many church activities during her membership. Mary was employed by Courtland Manufacturing in Lynchburg for many years until her retirement, in addition to helping her husband with their tobacco and cattle farm. She was a talented seamstress who could make anything without a pattern and with much skill. Know by her grandchildren, who adored her as Gunkie, she soon became known by all in the community as Gunkie. She was greatly loved and respected by all who knew her.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Margaret Reynolds (Cecil) of Madison Heights, and Barbara Miller (Danny) of Appomattox; four grandchildren, Trudy Harris of Palmyra, Wendy Bailey (Phil) of Union Grove, NC, Travis Miller (Cindy) of Appomattox and Tracy Miller of Appomattox; three great-grandchildren, Hunter Miller (Courtney), Haley Miller and Lauran Campbell all of Appomattox; one great-great-grandson, Robert Miller; one sister, Roberta Harvey Mitchell of Appomattox; a brother-in-law, Binford Rice Phelps (Fay) of Madison Heights; numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, James E. Harvey, W. Henry Harvey and Lewis G. Harvey; two sisters, Nettie Harvey Deadman and Martha Harvey Conner.

A funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Sunday, March 12, 2017 at Red Oak Baptist Church with Rev. Tom Barker officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 4 until 6 p.m., Saturday, March 11, 2017, at Robinson Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
