Dr. Martin H. Weik, Jr., 84, died Thursday, January 25, 2007 in UVA Hospital at 6:00 pm.
Born October 5, 1922 in New York City, he was a son of Martin H. Weik, Sr. of Germany and Josephine Meyerhofer Weik of Vienna, Austria.
Martin is survived by his wife, Allie Martin Weik of Appomattox; six children, Constance Moses and husband Charles, Martin H. Weik, III and wife Irina, Ronald R. Weik and wife Simonetta, Marie McBrearty and husband Sean, Grace Wood and husband Neal, and Joseph Weik and wife Lois; a sister, Edith Knight and husband, Delbert (Mid); seven grandchildren; five great grandchildren and six step-children, Josephine Hudson and husband Sherman, Kenneth Martin and wife Chelsea Ramona, Rachel Goff and husband Jake, Ellen Moss and husband Raymond, Donna Hale and husband Leon, and Kathy Stevens.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Edward C. Weik.
Martin served in World War II, the Korean War, and the Active Army Reserve, reaching the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He graduated from the College of the City of New York, Columbia University, and the George Washington University, where he received the degree of Doctor of Science. He served 30 years as a civilian electronic scientist with the U. S. Army Office of Research and Development, helping to develop early scientific electronic computers, such as the ENIAC, EDVAC, ORDVAC, and BRLESC. In later years, he worked at the Naval Research Laboratory and the Naval Sea Systems Command. He wrote several books on computers, communications, and fiber optics. He attended the Mineral Springs Baptist Church, Gladstone.
A memorial service will be held today at 1:00 pm in Mineral Springs Baptist Church by the Rev. Odell Coggins.
