Bertha Marie Hildreth Norton, 94, of Appomattox, quietly passed away on Saturday, March 21, 2015 in Virginia Baptist Hospital. Marie, or "Mimi", as she was known by friends and family, was born January 6, 1921, in Lyndon, Kansas to Ivy Helen Stanley and Jonathan Reed Hildreth. Marie grew up, attended school and junior college, and was married in Fort Scott, Kansas. After marriage, her life went in a new direction and Marie lived in several different states: Indiana, South Carolina, North Carolina, and finally Virginia. Along the way Marie was employed as a secretary at four different churches.
Church played a very important part in the life of Marie, and not just as employment. Marie loved God and believed in Him at a very early age. Early in life, she was taught to joyfully serve others; a trait that she never forgot. Marie was involved in teaching children in Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She was inspired by music and loved singing in the church choir, and on one occasion in the Billy Graham Crusade Choir. Marie was also an artist and used her talent to design church bulletins and, in later years, the scrapbooks for the Good Years group at Liberty Baptist Church.
Marie is survived by her husband of 70 years, Roscoe Alexander Norton, who always saw her as his beautiful bride; a daughter, Taunya Norton of Appomattox; four grandchildren, Morgan (Brenya) Straws of Gilbert, SC; Gabriel "Gabe" Metts of Batesburg, SC; Amanda (Juan) Guerrero of Statesville, NC; and Alexandria "Alex" (Chris) Purches of Appomattox, Va.; five great-grandchildren, Josiah and Solomon Straws of Gilbert, SC, and Ayden, Lilly, and Madison Guerrero of Statesville, NC. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ivy and Reed Hildreth; a daughter, Rosemary Metts; and a great-grandson, Isaiah Straws.
Everyone who met Marie loved her. She truly exemplified Proverbs 31: 10-31.
