Obituary

Marie Cardwell Foster, 92, of Madison Heights died Saturday September 6, 2014 at Westminster Canterbury where she had been a resident since 2010. Born on April 15, 1922 in Sherwill, she was a daughter of the late Charles Travis and Magdalene Jones Cardwell.

Marie graduated from the State Teachers College at Farmville (now Longwood University), and taught in the Campbell County and Amherst County school systems for over forty years, retiring in 1982. As a life-long member of Early's Chapel United Methodist Church, she had previously served as pianist/organist and teacher of the Wesley Bible Class in addition to holding numerous other positions on various committees. She was also a member for over fifty years of Delta Kappa Gamma, an international society for women educators, and the Amherst Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution.

She was preceded in death by her husband of sixty years, David B. Foster, a brother, Travis J. Cardwell, and a sister, Mae C. Coates.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Linda Foster, and three grandchildren, Laurie Oliver (Scott), John Foster and Katelyn Foster; a brother-in-law, Joseph Coates (Ardith); and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at Early's Chapel Cemetery at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 9th by the Rev. Ron Litten.

The family would like to gratefully acknowledge the wonderful and loving care provided by the staff at Westminster Canterbury and Centra Hospice.
