Malcolm Joel Coleman, Sr., 90, of Coleman Mountain Rd., Appomattox, died Sunday, January 17, 2010, in Southside Community Hospital.
Born in Appomattox County, January 18, 1919, he was the son of the late Joel Watkins Coleman and Cassie Maude Webb Coleman. Mack was a 1938 graduate of Pamplin High School and attended Phillips Business College. He was a retired farmer, a member of Hollywood Baptist Church, Oak Grove Hunt Club, and Pine Gove Hunt Club. Mack loved music and it was a large part of his life. He was a member of a duo known as The Virginia Serenaders, Mack and Jack, on WFLO in the late 1940's. He was a bluegrass guitarist and in his 70's taught himself to play the mandolin.
Mack is survived by his wife of 62 years, Esther Finch Coleman; two daughters, Nancy Farmer and husband, Ted of Fredericksburg and Brenda Kiger of Appomattox; six grandchildren, Malcolm Joel Coleman, III and wife, Kimberly, Jeremy Watkins Coleman, William Thomas Coleman, Shannon Farmer Maurer and husband, John, Leigh-Ann Farmer Davis and husband, Justin, Jonathan Francis McIntire; and daughter-in-law, Constance Marie Coleman.
He was preceded in death by a son, Malcolm Joel Coleman, Jr. and daughter, Beverly Ann Coleman.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm, Thursday, January 21, 2010, at Hollywood Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert Millis. Burial will follow in the Coleman Family Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 – 8:30 pm at Robinson Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
