Maury Gibbs "Dick" Martin, Jr., 91, of Lime Plant Road, Appomattox, went to be with the Lord, on Saturday, October 15, 2016 at his residence. For 68 years, he was the loving husband of Lelia Burge Martin.
Born in Appomattox County, Va., on October 9, 1925, he was a son of Lillian Drinkard and Maury Gibbs Martin, Sr. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and an avid farmer all his life. Dick was a brakeman for the C & O Railroad in Gladstone from 1958 until his retirement in 1985. He will always be remembered as a gentle, kind, and caring person.
In addition to his wife he is survived by three daughters, Connie Martin and husband, Keith of Appomattox, Kathy Martin of Gladys, and Tammy Hunter and husband, Brett of Appomattox; special granddaughter, Samantha Jo Hunter; two sisters, Alice Yeatts and husband, Larry of Crewe and Barbara Whitehead and husband, Larry of Darlington Heights; two step-granddaughters, Heather Cheatham and husband, Tim and Felicia Mann and husband, Ben; five step-great-grandchildren, Caleb, Jackson, Abbey, Parker and Greyson; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Evelyn Moore and Geraldine Metz and a brother, Alfred Carroll Martin.
The family wishes to express a special thank you to all the caregivers and friends involved in attending to the needs of Dick.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Tuesday, October 18, 2016, at Trinity United Methodist Church by the Rev. Larry Mann. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall and other times at the residence.
