Loretta Doss Layne, 87, of Chestnut Drive, Appomattox, passed away on Thursday, January 28, 2021. She was the loving wife of the late Jack David Layne, Sr. for 57 years.

Born in Appomattox County, Va., she was a daughter of the late Abbitt Delaware Doss and Nannie Lucille Ferguson Doss. In 1952 she graduated from Appomattox High School. Upon graduation, she was employed by the Bank of Appomattox until she was hired by Farmers National Bank, where she worked for 33 years retiring as Vice-President and Branch Manager. Loretta was a life-long member of Memorial United Methodist Church. She enjoyed bowling on a team for many years.

She is survived by her son, Jack David Layne, Jr. and his wife, Freda; twin daughters, Dale L. Weakley and her husband, Steve, all of Appomattox, and Gail L. Wheeler and her husband, Tommy of Richmond; one grandson, Ryan Weakley of Appomattox; sister-in-law, Faye M. Doss of Appomattox; brother-in-law, Carl D. Hardwick of Lynchburg; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Jackson D. Doss and A. Wayne Doss and a sister, Frankie D. Hardwick.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to her caregivers, Deborah, Jean, Tracy, Debbie, Patina, Brittany, Valerie, Dianne, and Mary.

A funeral service with social distancing and required mask will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, February 1, 2021, at Memorial United Methodist Church by Rev. Norman Ramsey. A private family interment will follow in Liberty Cemetery.
