Katherine Matthews Alvis, 91, of Spanish oaks Rd, died Wednesday, June 24, 2009. She was the wife of the late John Pleasants Alvis, Jr.
Born in Orange County, a daughter of the late J. Herbert Matthews, Jr., and Kate Smith Matthews. Katherine started teaching in 1938 in a one-room school in Madison Co. From there she taught primary grades at Stonewall, Oakville, Concord, and Appomattox Elementary schools. Also important to her life was her active life at Hebron Baptist Church where she worked with children for over 50 years and was pianist and organist for many years. In her later years she took great pleasure in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and vacationing in St. Maarten, Hawaii and the Outer Banks with her family. She was also a member of the retired teachers and a former member of Concord Ruritan Club.
She is survived by a daughter, Betty Jane Bryan and husband, Howard of Lynchburg; two sons, John P. Alvis III, and wife, Annette of Concord, William H. Alvis and wife, Mary Jane of Lynchburg; one sister, Josephine "Jo" Matthews of Concord, seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a brother J. Herbert Matthews, III, and a sister Rachael M. Coleman.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 27, 2009 at Hebron Baptist Church by the Rev. Tom Walker and the Rev. Sammy Gunter. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at her residence.
