Julia Fielder Torrence, 83, of Plum Branch Rd., Concord, died Monday, May 12, 2008. She was the wife of the late Robert Elwood (Nice) Torrence, Sr.
Born in Franklin County, August 6, 1924, she was a daughter of the late Fred and Alice Chambers Fielder. Julia was a member of Blue Ridge Community church and a homemaker. She started and directed the Network for Women in Crisis, a battered women's shelter in Lynchburg.
She is survived by three sons; Woody Torrence and wife Nancy, of Forest, Ronnie Torrence and wife Mary of Concord, Victor Torrence and wife Wanda of Concord; one daughter, Lois Phillips and husband Sam of Concord; eight grandchildren, Matt and Charity Torrence, Jonathan and Holly Torrence, Nathan and Sarah Torrence, Josh and Courtney Phillips, Katie and Seth Bigham, Brent Phillips, Haley Torrence, Lyndsey and Morgan Croft; seven great-grandchildren, Isaiah, Cade, Eden, Nahla, Kinley, Cambre and Lillian and a sister, Pauline Fleenor of Roanoke.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Terrell Fielder and Sam Fielder and a sister, Reva Catlett.
A memorial service will be held 7:00 p.m., Thursday, May 15, 2008 in Blue Ridge Community Church, 2361 New London Rd., Forest by Dr. Woody Torrence. A private family burial will be held.
The family will receive friends at the residence.
