John William Muth, Jr. 78, passed away on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was twice widowed his first wife was the late Mildred “Millie” Martha Muth; his second wife was the late Susan Marie Martin Muth.
Born in Baltimore, Maryland on April 27, 1947, he was the son of the late John Williams Muth, Sr. and Mary Jane Thornton Muth. John was a Vietnam veteran serving in the US Army and was a Purple Heart recipient. He graduated from Clear Creek Baptist Bible College and pastored Cedar Baptist in Dillwyn, Sycamore Baptist in Gretna and Reedy Spring Baptist in Spout Spring. He was a member of the American Legion Post #104 and after retirement served as the Chaplin for the Appomattox County Sheriff’s Department.
He is survived by his daughter, Gretchen Muth Hughes and husband, Brian; five grandchildren, Holden Hughes, Hadley Coffey, Harrison Hughes, Hayden Hughes, and Oliver Hughes; and four siblings, Billy Muth and wife, Margie, Richard Muth and wife, Mary, Nancy Burns and husband, David, and Margie Brosi and husband, Kevin.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Heidi Nicole Muth and two brothers, Timothy Muth and Michael Muth.
A funeral service will be held at 2 pm, Tuesday, February 24, 2026, at Reedy Spring Baptist Church officiated by Rev. Chris Brooks. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military rites accorded by American Legion Post #104 and VFW #9855 combined honor guard.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
