John W. Megginson, 90, of Church Street, Appomattox died at Virginia Baptist Hospital on Tuesday, January 18, 2011.
Johnny was born in Appomattox County on August 10, 1920 a son of the late Virgie Spradlin and Samuel Thomas Megginson.
Johnny was a retired farmer and merchant. From 1964-75 he operated J.W. Megginson grocery and was considered the Honorary Mayor of Promise Land.
During World War II he served in the United States Army, was a member of American Legion Post #104 for 59 years and was a member of County Line Hunt Club.
He is survived by his sister, Jean M. Nash of Brandon, MS, numerous nieces and nephews, sister-in-law, Margaret F. Megginson of Appomattox and brother-in-law Bo Phelps of Crewe.
He was preceded in death by five sisters, Molly Megginson, Lucy M. Gilliam, Nancy M. Hughs, Anna M. Phelps, Edith M. Williams and two brothers, Riley T. Megginson and Wallace R. Megginson.
The family wishes to acknowledge and thank his devoted caregiver, Pat Davidson of Appomattox.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2:00 P.M. January 21, 2011 at Robinson Funeral Home by the Rev. Matt Davis. Burial will follow in Liberty Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 tonight (Thursday) at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of Plicky & Mary Williams with whom he made his home.
