John Beverly McCracken, 92, of Ferguson Street, Appomattox, died Monday, February 28, 2011, at his residence. He was the husband of the late Dorothy Pauline Graves McCracken.
Born in Abington, VA, on May 5, 1918, he was a son of the late John Floyd McCracken and Rhoda S. Widener McCracken. He was a member of Liberty Chapel Baptist Church where he served as superintendant of Sunday schools and sang in the choir. John served his country during WW II as a member of the US Army, retired from Potomac Yard Railroad, and as a stone mason.
He is survived by six children, John B. (J.B.) McCracken, Jr. and wife Mary of Alexandria, David L. McCracken and wife Teresa of Appomattox, Barbara Jean Lane of Manassas, M. Linda Lane and husband George of Kerneysville, WV, Susan Gail Musick and husband Jay, and Lisa Kay Martin and husband Tony both of Appomattox; 16 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and numerous great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by six siblings, Manuel, Walter, Laura, Lottie, Barbara, and David.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m., Thursday, March 3, 2011, at Liberty Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert Wilson. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military rites accorded by American Legion Post #104 and V.F.W. #9855 combined honor guard.
The family will receive friends at Robinson Funeral Home on Wednesday, March 2, 2011 from 7-8:30 p.m. and other times at the residence.
