Appomattox- The John Addison (Jack) Mathews, M.D., 78, of 895 Gordon Drive, died unexpectedly Friday, March 17, 2006, at UNC Hospital, Chapel Hill, NC. He was the widower of Hattie Grace Harris Mathews.
Dr. Mathews was born in Big Stone Gap, Wise County, Virginia on June 21, 1927, a son of the late William Goodloe Mathews and Ida Nelson Mathews Tyree. He attended Altavista High School, Virginia Episcopal School, and was a member of the Corps of Cadets at VPI&SU where he graduated in 1949 with a B.S. in Biology and Chemistry. He then taught at King William High School at Central Garage for two years. During the Korean War he served his country as a 1st.Lt. in the United States Air Force at Amarillo, TX. From 1953-54, he attended the University of Virginia and from 1954 -1958 he attended and graduated from the Medical College of Virginia. He then interned at Roanoke Memorial Hospital and in 1959 he came to Appomattox and established Appomattox Family Practice from which he retired in 1993 but continued to see patients part time until 1998. .
He was a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice, member of the Medical Society of Virginia, Lynchburg Medical Society and Past President of the Virginia Academy of Family Practice.
He was a Communicant of St. Anne's Episcopal Church where he was very active and was a former member of the Vestry and Senior Warden. Long active in civic affairs, Jack was a member and Past President of the Appomattox Lions Club; member of American Legion Post #104 and a former member of the Board of Directors Farmers Bank.
He is survived by his wife, Marlene Elizabeth Bolling Henley Mathews, M.D.; one son, John A. Mathews, Jr. and his wife Anita of Roanoke; two daughters, Nancye M. Greenwood and her husband James D. of Manakin-Sabot, Peggy M. Graham of Oneida, TN; 7 grandchildren, Jamie, Carrilynn and Christopher (Bo) Greenwood; Stephanie Graham, Melissa G. Boyatt and her husband Matt; Erica & Meredith Mathews; a sister, Frances M. Lane of Lynchburg; three step-children, Jeffrey Henley and his wife Rhyanne; Natalie Henley, Fred Henley and his wife Cathy.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 am Monday, March 20, 2006 at St. Anne's Episcopal Church by the Rev. Michael B. Ferguson. Burial will follow in the Family Cemetery with Military Rites accorded by the American Legion Post #104 Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends at the church on Oakleigh Avenue from 3-5:00 pm today (Sunday) and at other times at the residence.
