John Lauter, 84, of Promise Land Rd., Appomattox, died Sunday, December 7, 2008 in the Appomattox Health and Rehablitation Center. He was the husband of Alma Hettie Lauter.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, January 28, 1924, he was a son of the late George and Stella Lauter. John was a member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church. He joined the Army Air Force leaving prior to the Korean War to attend Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, NY on the G. I. bill. He graduated with an Associate Degree in Dental Laboratory Technology. He then joined the Air Force where he worked for 21 years as a Dental Lab Tech. After retiring from the Air Force he worked for Hampton Dental Lab for 15 years before moving to Appomattox. He was a tree farmer and owned tree farms in Appomattox and Prince Edward counties.
John lived all over the world during his time in service and enjoyed keeping current with local, national, and world affairs. He was a quiet, caring man who enjoyed long walks in the countryside.
In addition to his wife he is survived by three daughters, Carol A. Lauter of Madison Heights, Louise A. Williams and husband, Travis of Pamplin, Adele L. Counts and husband, Bruce of Newport News; a son, Edward E. Lauter and wife, April of Spout Spring; eight grandchildren, Carolyn Williams Chapman and James, Kelly McAllister and Tommy, Matthew Williams, Adam Williams, Laura Williams, Danielle Counts, John Lauter, and Stella Lauter; two great grandchildren, Alizandria McAllister and Ava Chapman; three step grandchildren, Amanda Hill, Sarah Counts, and James Counts; and a sister, Irene Leonswicz of Brooklyn, NY.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Edward Lauter.
Funeral services will be held 12:00 pm, Wednesday, December 10, 2008 in Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church by Father James Gallagher. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military rites accorded by American Legion Post 104 and VFW 9855 combined honor guard.
The family will receive friends at Robinson Funeral Home today (Tuesday) from 7-8:30 pm.
