Appomattox: John Howard Goin, Sr., 86, of 4181 Hollywood Rd., passed away Monday, August 28, 2006 at his residence. He was the husband of the late Frances Johnson Goin.
Born in Appomattox County, November 7, 1919, he was a son of the late Dewitt T. Goin, Sr. and Katie Grebb Goin. John was a member of Walkers Presbyterian Church and served as an elder for 50 years. He was a veteran of the US Army Air Corp, serving his country during WWII in the European Theater. He was a member of the Appomattox Farm Bureau, the Pamplin Ruritans, the County Farm Service Agency Committee, and the American Legion Post #104. He retired as a Soil Conservation Technician.
He is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth R. and Frances Goin, John H., Jr. and Brenda Goin, Gary S. and Mary Louise Goin, all of Appomattox; one daughter and son-in-law, Kathy G. and Richard Jones of Concord; his step-mother, Alice B. Goin of Appomattox; 10 grandchildren, Kristy J. and Jason Whitener, Dana G. and Eddie Glover, Wesley Goin, Cindi Goin, Lisa J. and Chris Lowes, Michael Goin, Stephen Jones, Tara Goin, Sarah Beth Goin and Kimberly Goin; three great grandchildren, Alexis Hamlet, Scott and Brian Whitener; six sisters, Evie G. Harris of Lynchburg, Kate G. Adams of Appomattox, Rachel G. Harris of Manakin, Mary G. Lucas of Richmond, Barbara G. Dickerson of Appomattox and Margaret G. Guido of Fredericksburg; six brothers, Joe Goin of Lynchburg, Hunter Goin of Costa Rica, Marshall Goin of Appomattox, Lester Goin of Cumberland, Leon Goin and Steve Goin both of Appomattox; and special caregivers, Teanna Stamper, Diane Vernon, and Barbara Campbell.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Frank Goin, DeWitt (Butch) Goin, and Tom Goin and a sister, Nannie G. Farinholt.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Wednesday, August 30, 2006 at Walkers Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Millard Stimpson, Rev. Mark Neiderbrock and Rev. Jason Whitener. Burial will follow in the Goin Family Cemetery with Military rites accorded by the American Legion Post #104 Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends at Robinson Funeral Home Tuesday from 7-8:30 pm and other times at the residence.
