John David Goetz, 62, of Windy Knob Lane, Appomattox, died unexpectedly on Saturday, July 30, 2011. He was the beloved husband of Dana Burnette Goetz.
Born in Hagerstown, Maryland, on March 17, 1949, he was the son of Marjorie Artz Goetz of Appomattox and the late William Thomas Goetz. John was a member and elder of Rustburg Presbyterian Church, an accounting manager for Buckingham Branch Railroad, and a former longtime employee of Wynn's Precision. He was a graduate of Brookville High School and The University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business. He received his Masters of Accountancy at Lynchburg College. For 35 years, he was a football official for the Old Dominion Athletic Conference and the Virginia High School League. John loved his family, South Nags Head, and was an avid golfer and gardener.
In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by four daughters, Jennifer Goetz Nystrom and husband, Scott of Richmond, Courtney Stauffer Mayberry and husband, Jeff of Lynchburg, Emily Goetz Thompson and husband, Kenny of Greensboro, NC, and Laura Stauffer Chandler and husband, Tim of Appomattox; two brothers, Tom Goetz and wife, Judy of Hatfield, PA and Eddie Goetz and wife, Beverly of Columbus, OH; three sisters, Penny Goetz Coleman and husband, Al of Rockaway, NJ, Peggy Goetz and husband, Richard Timpson of Takoma Park, MD, and Libby Goetz Hagan and husband, Jim of Thornton, PA; 12 grandchildren, Molly , Jack, and Becca Nystrom; Jordan, Peyton, and Jillian Mayberry; Will and Charlie Thompson; and Jared, Keaton, Riley, and Jake Chandler; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 2, 2011, at Rustburg Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Susan Balfour. Following the service there will be a reception in the church fellowship hall. The family will receive friends and family at other times at the residence.
