Joe Whitney Doss, 86, of Appomattox gained his wings on Monday, July 3, 2023, at Lynchburg General Hospital surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Ruth Sharp Doss.

Born on August 16, 1936, in Appomattox, he was the son of the late Aubrey Layfette Doss and Gwendolyn Smoot Doss. He was a retired carpenter that could build anything. Joe had a deep love for his family and was the rock and glue that held them together. He had an enormous heart that showed itself by putting others first, which always made him happy.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children, Dale Cumbie and husband, Glenn of Arizona, Glenda Page and husband, Sammy of Lynchburg, Marvin Doss and wife, Teresa of Madison Heights, and Judy McFadden and husband, Ricky of Gladstone; six grandchildren, Brian Cumbie, Travis Cumbie, Jennifer Stults, Starr Harris, Ricky McFadden, and Josh McFadden; and 10 great-grandchildren, Jovianna Touey, Autumn Cumbie, Nevaeh Moore, Ryder Lee Stults, Connor Harris, Grayson Harris, Paylin Harris, Graham Harris, Akayla McFadden, and Blalyn McFadden.

He was preceded in death by nine brothers, Randolph, Bud, Herman, Horace, Aubrey, Harold, Sam, Doug, and Gene Doss; and three sisters, Nora Handy, Mable Smith, and Peggy Watson.

A funeral service will be held 11 am Friday, July 7, 2023, at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Chad Harris officiating. Burial will follow at Liberty Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church and other times at his residence.
